What Da Phin was born from a powerful story of courage, migration, and a love for coffee.

After fleeing Vietnam by boat after the war, our founders’ parents arrived in Australia with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They worked tirelessly to build a new life for their family, one filled with love, laughter and plenty of coffee. As children, the founders were too young to fully grasp what their parents had endured, the losses they carried, and the challenges of starting again in a new country.

It was only as adults that the founders truly understood how hard their parents had worked to give them a better life. Visiting Vietnam helped them appreciate just how beautiful and unique it is: the people, the food, the landscapes, and the everyday rituals that make it feel like a home away from home.

What Da Phin became their way of reconnecting with that heritage.

They explored the country their parents had left behind the way many locals do, by sitting down for a cup of Vietnamese coffee. Coffee, to them, was never just a drink. It was an experience, a slow, deliberate ritual that carries stories of where the beans are grown, how they are farmed, and the communities that nurture them.

Through What Da Phin, the founders sought to honour their roots by supporting local farmers in Vietnam who work hard every day, upholding traditions and caring for their land. Each cup was a tribute to their family’s journey and a bridge between the life their parents built in Australia and the culture they came from.

Today, that story continues.

We are proud to carry forward the heart of What Da Phin while expanding its vision. Our mission is to bring the tastes and rich culture of Southeast Asia to Australia, starting with the bold, distinctive character of Vietnamese coffee and growing into a broader celebration of the region’s flavours, stories and people.
