Origin: Italy  |  Prep: 2 minutes  |  Brew: 1 minute

About This Brew

Espresso Romano is a shot of espresso served with a slice or twist of lemon, often with the rim of the cup rubbed with the peel. Despite the 'Romano' name, its origins are debated and it is more famous abroad than in Rome itself, but the pairing has a real logic behind it.

The bright citrus oils from the lemon peel lift and accentuate the espresso's sweetness and cut through any bitterness, making the coffee taste cleaner and more vibrant. Some rub the lemon on the rim for aroma only; others squeeze a few drops in. Minimal and refreshing, it is a quick, zesty way to enjoy a strong shot, especially after a meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 shot espresso
  • 1 thin slice or twist of lemon peel
  • Sugar (optional)
