Café Bombón (Spanish Condensed Milk Coffee)

Origin: Spain (Valencia) | Prep: 2 minutes | Brew: 2 minutes
About This Brew
Café Bombón hails from Valencia and is prized as much for its looks as its taste: equal parts espresso and sweetened condensed milk layered in a clear glass, the pale milk sitting beneath the dark coffee in two crisp bands. Because condensed milk is denser than espresso, the layers form naturally and stay distinct until you stir them together.
The drink shares its DNA with Southeast Asian condensed-milk coffees (unsurprisingly, as the style is thought to have travelled with returning expatriates), but in Spain it became a beloved café standard. Sweet, strong and small, it is served in a glass so you can admire the layers before stirring them into a rich, dessert-like shot.
Ingredients
- 1 shot espresso
- 1 shot's worth of sweetened condensed milk (equal parts)
Equipment Needed
- Espresso machine or moka pot
- Small clear glass
- Spoon
Instructions
- Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the bottom of a small clear glass.
- Pull a shot of espresso.
- Slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon so it floats above the condensed milk in a distinct layer.
- Serve with a spoon; stir together before drinking.
